Young MLS players that could play in the Qatar World Cup for the USMNT Part 2

02/23/2021

The second man on our list of potential USMNT players is the 2019 MLS All Star Paxton Pomykal. We'll be breaking down his game and discussing what role he could play in the USMNT in these upcoming world cup qualifying games in September.

Paxton Pomykal

Paxton Pomykal (21 years old), a 2019 MLS All-Star, had a rough 2020 season as he only played in 5 games due to a core/hip muscle surgery. A procedure like this has a 6-month estimated recovery time. Right now is a perfect time to discuss Paxton Pomykal as he is just now starting to return to full training and will most likely be ready for the 2021 MLS season starting in April.

Paxton Pomykal is an attacking midfielder playing for FC Dallas. In 2020 Pomykal only scored one goal before his injury. In 2019 however, Paxton started 20 games with 2 goals and 5 assists in 25 games for FC Dallas. Pomykal, before his injury, was linked to Arsenal and AC Milan on Tom Bogert's podcast.

Style of play

Paxton Pomykal would be a great and versatile number #8 at the national team level. I believe he will be competing with Giovanni Reyna for the attacking mid position. Both have similar styles. Where Pomykal shines is his ability to make correct decisions. His anticipation of his teammate's runs is what makes him a great passer. I believe Pomykal, if 100% healthy, will bring FC Dallas to the playoffs and have a strong 2021 season. Having a great year will be important in regards to a transfer to Europe, as well as earning a spot on the 23-man squad for Qatar.

Pros

  • Excellent Vision

Pomykal is fantastic at delivering well-weighted passes from deep within the midfield. He also possesses above-average crossing ability. I believe with age and a slow and steady improvement to his already great technical play, he will be in the squad for Qatar.

  • Technical Ability + a little Flair

Pomykal is fantastic at delivering well-weighted passes from deep within the midfield. He also possesses above-average crossing ability. I believe with age and a slow and steady improvement to his already great technical play, he will be in the squad for Qatar.

Cons

  • Slow/Not very physical

Despite being a good dribbler, Pomykal has this sluggish nature about him. His agility and top speed aren't the best, and he can be muscled off the ball quite easily. Paxton being 5''7 and 147 pounds shows he'll never be a big physical player, but being slow and undersized will surely hamper him in the midfield and is something he must overcome with his technical ability

  • Sex Appeal

Unfortunately, in a virtual date bidding contest for a date with Paxton Pomykal, only three bids were placed, ending with a total of $105
